The Daily News NIE website offers valuable information about the many school programs offered, interesting links for teachers, students, and parents.
Newspaper In Education (NIE) program is a cooperative effort between area schools, business partners, and The Daily News to encourage the use of the newspaper as a learning tool for classroom instruction.
Knowledge is power and studies have shown the newspaper to be a creative, efficient teaching tool, improving students reading, math and writing skills, while igniting their interest in the world and their community.
The goals of our NIE program are to impact literacy, develop life-long readers, and encourage students to make good life choices to become responsible citizens in their communities.
To achieve these goals, there are many educational resources offered to area educators including sponsored classroom newspapers, access to the online edition, supplemental teaching materials and lesson plans.
During the 2016-2017 school year, 141 teachers are participating in the program representing the Huntingdon Area, Juniata Valley, Mount Union Area, Southern Huntingdon County, and Tussey Mountain school districts as well as Huntingdon County Career & Technology Center, New Day Charter School, Calvary Christian Academy, Huntingdon County Child & Adult Development Corporation, and Employment & Training. Nearly 5,000 students are reading The Daily News in their classrooms to improve their reading skills and become more informed of their local communities.
The Daily News is used as a learning tool in every subject area and every grade level.
