The Blair County Historical Society and Baker Mansion announces their grand season opening May 29, noon-4 p.m., a 100th anniversary celebration. The day will include games, prizes, food, tours, and a free concert by The San Tones at 2 p.m.

During the celebration, Baker Mansion tours will be available starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m. Blair County Historical Society Members tours are free. The special Wedding exhibit will also be open.

Sunday on the Lawn

The Sunday on the Lawn series will return, a free event featuring area high school bands, music groups, and arts programming that is open to the public on the Baker Mansion lawn. All are welcome to bring chairs/blankets and enjoy live entertainment.

Aug. 7, 2-4 p.m., Pleine Air Painting at Baker Mansion (Rain date: Aug. 14)

Aug. 21, 2-4 p.m., 46th PA Regiment Civil War Band (Rain date: Aug. 28)

Sept. 4, 2-4 p.m., Bone Jacked Band (Rain date: Sept. 11)

Sept. 18, 2-4 p.m., Altoona Area High School Band (Rain date: Sept. 25)

Lecture series

All lecture series talks are free and open to the public. Most lectures are the third Wednesday of each month, at 7 p.m., May-Nov. 2022. The location for the series is between the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum and The Sanctuary at ArtsAltoona Center.

Aug. 17, Restorations of Pennsylvania Landmark Buildings, presented by John Rita: the amazing restoration work by John Rita of various landmarks, the Sanctuary at ArtsAltoona Center, 2212 6th Ave., Altoona

Sept. 21, FirstFrontier, presented by Julia Plummer Schokker: a look at 300 years of local history, the Sanctuary at ArtsAltoona Center, 2212 6th Ave., Altoona

Oct. 19, The Monsters of the Appalachians, presented by Michael Allison: Folktales of supernatural creatures that originated from the early settlers and adapted to the new world, The Sanctuary at ArtsAltoona Center, 2212 6th Ave., Altoona

Nov. 16, Altoona’s Silk Mill, presented by Michael Farrow: The history and rebirth of Altoona’s silk mill, The Sanctuary at ArtsAltoona Center, 2212 6th Ave, Altoona
