John Edward “Jack” Stroup, 91, formerly of Bald Eagle, died Monday, March 11, 2019 at Epworth Manor after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 22, 1927 in Tyrone, a son of the late John D. and Viola May (Claybaugh) Stroup. He was twice married, first to Effie Mae Nearhoof, who survives, and then to Mary Louise Richards, who is deceased. Surviving are children Linda Wertz in Bald Eagle, Larry Stroup (Eileen) of Downingtown, Pa., Buddy Stroup (Janet) of Flinton, Pa., Micky Stroup (Valerie) of Mobile, Alabama; step-children Sharon Turnbaugh (Richard) of Manheim, Pa., Debra Golden (Richard) and Jackie Hess (Barry Wible) of Tyrone, Dusty Greenawalt of Sandy Ridge and Kerry Woomer of Kileen, Texas. There are 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Stroup, grandson Eric Golden and brother Robert E. Stroup.
He was a graduate of Tyrone High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired in 1990 as a Lab Tester at Westvaco Paper Mill after 43 years service. He always enjoyed Bingo, family outings, Tyrone and Penn State sports.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc. from 1 p.m. to the service at 2 p.m. with Military Honors. Inurnment will be at Blair Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Bald Eagle Fire Co., 13389 S. Eagle Valley Rd., Tyrone, PA.
