In the second of four parts of Football Camp Diaries, The Daily Herald talked to Bellwood-Antis senior Troy Walker on the start of camp and on the Blue Devils’ upcoming season.
Q: How has the summer gone all the way until Monday when camp started?
A: “In the summer we focused a lot on speed and strength, but last week and this week so far has been a lot of mental preparation. We’re making sure we remember everything, going over every play and making sure we have everything down, and getting ready for the Central scrimmage this weekend.”
Q: How has the transition been from Year 1 to Year 2 with Coach Lovrich at the helm?
A: “It’s been really smooth. He keeps improving every year. He keeps adding new stuff. He keeps coming up with new ways to keep us fired up and keeping us ready for games.”
Q: Do you prefer offense or defense?
A: “I prefer defense. I feel like on defense, every single play you have an opportunity to change the game. Offense, you can do your job every single play, but you don’t really have that game-changing ability every play.”
Q: What does it mean for you to be playing in the Backyard Brawl for the last time?
A: “It’s just crazy to think that this is our last ride with my brothers. We’ve been playing with each other since seventh grade. It’s just a lot of preparation, and there’s going to be a lot of emotion in that game. You’ll see us all pretty fired up for that game.”
