The Tyrone softball team ended its season in style this week, closing the 2023 campaign with a pair of wins at home that were each special in their own way.
On Monday, Tyrone toppled rival Bellwood-Antis 14-1 in a game that lasted only five innings. Then, on Tuesday, the Lady Eagles used a small-ball approach over the final two innings to register a 3-2 win over Bellefonte, which entered the game as the top 4A school in District 6 with 12 wins.
Tyrone fell behind Bellefonte 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning on a throwing error but responded immediately in its next at-bat. Beth Pearson led off with a hit, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Allison Beeman, and then scored to tie it off a two-strike, two-out single to left center by Amariah Sprankle.
Starting pitcher Maddie Rockwell retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, and the Lady Eagles got back to work in the bottom of the frame. Macy Lingenfelter singled, moved up a base on a sacrifice by Emma Dibert, made it to third on a ground out by Emily Smith, and then came home with the winning run on a Texas-league single by KK Brodzina.
The victory allowed Tyrone to end its season 5-13.
Just one day earlier the Lady Eagles didn’t need a small ball strategy to take down B-A. Tyrone cracked 9 hits, including 3 from Pearson, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI.
Beeman added two hits and 2 RBI for Tyrone, which used back-to-back innings in the third and fourth to generate all of its offense against starter Ashlynn Snyder.
The Lady Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate in the third and 13 in the fourth. The Lady Devils, meanwhile, committed three of their four errors during that time, making two long innings even longer.
Rockwell got the win, striking out 7 and walking none.
