A week that began with a humbling loss ended with a solid road victory for the Tyrone Lady Eagles basketball team.
Tyrone traveled to Centre County on Thursday and Kayelin Gibbons had herself a night, scoring 29 points to lead Tyrone over Penns Valley 47-35.
Gibbons performance highlighted just how valuable the senior post is when she’s in shape and healthy. In December, in Gibbons’ first game of the season, Tyrone blew a double-digit lead in the second half against the Lady Rams. Gibbons had only 8 points and the Lady Eagles dropped to 0-4.
That was never going to happen on Thursday. Against a straight-up man-to-man defense, Gibbons owned Penns Valley in the first half, 17 points as Tyrone took a 23-12 lead.
The Lady Rams never did adjust to Gibbons’ prowess in the paint, sticking with man defense all the way, but after halftime other players got involved to spread the scoring load. Bree Paul canned a pair of threes after halftime and Alayna Woomer had five in the third quarter.
The Lady Rams got the deficit under 10 just once in the second half, and when the rubber met the road Tyrone went back to Gibbons, who had 10 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
With the victory, Tyrone improved to 8-6 overall and 7-3 in the Mountain League. The Lady Eagles are 8-2 since their December loss to the Lady Rams.
The turnaround was a sharp contrast to the Martin Luther King Day game Tyrone had on Monday against Hollidaysburg, which came to Tyrone with an unblemished record.
With Gibbons blanketed on the inside, the Lady Eagles were forced to look for options elsewhere. Woomer, who had 3, was the top scorer outside of Gibbons, who managed 13 in a 60-21 loss.
The Lady Tigers, on the other hand, had plenty of places to look for offense, none better than seniors Sydney Lear and Alison Hahajik. Lear led Hollidaysburg with 20, including four from beyond the arc, while Hatajik netted 16.
After a win over Clearfield on Thursday, the Lady Tigers stood at 13-0 overall and 8-0 in the Mountain League.
