Taylor and Rhoades

Tyrone’s Jacob Taylor looks to pass as Cortlynd Rhoades comes up the court. The Golden Eagles defeated Central, 57-41.

Tyrone rebounded from its first loss of the season to defeat Central 57-41 Wednesday night. Coming off a tough overtime loss at Johnstown the night before, the Golden Eagles did not play their best basketball. But it was enough to earn another Mountain League victory against a quality team.

The Golden Eagles started the game quickly. Landen DeHaas, Brandon Lucas, and Blaine Hoover all scored on full court fast break layups to open up an early 9-2 lead. After a Central basket, Damon Gripp knocked down a three-pointer and than picked off a pass and went full court for a layup to give Tyrone a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Blaine Hoover and Jake Taylor scored early in the second quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 19-6 lead. But Central started to make some shots off their half court offense against Tyrone’s tough man to man defense to cut the lead to 10 points. Damon Gripp’s basket at the buzzer gave Tyrone a 30-18 halftime lead.

Jake Taylor scored the first two baskets of the second half to give the Golden Eagles a commanding 35-18 lead. But that’s when the wheels fell off of Tyrone’s offense for the remainder of the quarter. Central did a nice job of getting back on defense and packing into their zone forcing Tyrone to shoot from long range.

It was apparent that last night’s physical contest at Johnstown was taking its toll as the Golden Eagles shot zero percent from the field the rest of the quarter and the Dragons climbed to within nine points to end the quarter.

Landen DeHaas had a big fourth quarter scoring nine of his 11 points and Tyrone’s offense got back on track to close out the game. Tyrone’s defense also stepped up forcing some turnovers. The Golden Eagles opened up a 15-point lead midway through the quarter, forcing Central into a man-to-man defense and cruised the rest of the way to a 57-41 win.

Damon Gripp led all scorers with 17 points, and Jake Taylor chipped in with 14 points to pace the Golden Eagles attack. Although Tyrone played at times sluggishly and shot poorly from the field, they did rebound from a tough loss and played well enough to win.

The Golden Eagles won the junior varsity game, 54-52. David Lang led the way with 19 points for Tyrone.
