The Tyrone girls track and field team continued its mini-dynasty this week, finishing third at the District 6 2A championships at Mansion Park in Altoona on the strength of several PIAA-qualifying performances.
Junior Rebecca Lewis started the two-day event by claiming an individual title in the long jump, leaping 16-6 ¾ for the second individual District gold of her career. Lewis was the winner in the 400 as a sophomore.
On Wednesday, the Lady Eagles’ 4X100 relay team of Nicole Ramsey, Lewis, Alayna Greene and Reagan Irons earned another gold medal when it finished in 51.61 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than second-place Central.
That contingent will be heading to Shippensburg next week for the PIAA championships, but the Lady Eagles weren’t done there.
Irons, who won bronze at the PIAAs last season in the triple jump, qualified in that same event by finishing second with a jump of 35-10. She just missed qualifying in the high jump, placing fourth with a height of 5-0.
Lewis qualified in two other events, placing third in the 100 meters and second in the 200.
In a rebuilding season, it was a strong showing for the Lady Eagles, who had won the last two 2A titles. Tyrone had 10 individual place-winners, including an under-the-radar performance by Ramsey, who as a freshman placed in the triple jump and 200 before running the opening leg of the 400 relay.
