Offense has been a little bit of a struggle for the Tyrone Legion Federation League team in the early part of the schedule this summer.
The struggles continued on Monday evening, but one inning made a world of difference for Tyrone on Monday evening.
Tyrone Legion scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to win a walkoff over Martin Oil, 5-4, despite only having two hits for the game.
“We hit everything in the air,” said Tyrone Legion manager Kevin Soellner. “Pitching has to get better too. But we’ll be okay.”
Martin Oil starting pitcher Blake Johnston had thrown six strong innings prior to the bottom of the seventh, but walked his first two batters of the bottom of the seventh. Martin Oil elected to bring in Alex Schmoke the rest of the way.
Schmoke walked his first batter before getting a strikeout.
After Tyrone’s Colson Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk to score Nic Light, David Lang grounded out to bring in the second run to make it 4-3 with runners at second and third.
Kevin Lehner then hit a high bouncer to shortstop that he legged out for an infield single to tie the game. The throw to first went out of play, which allowed Lewis to score the game-winning run.
“We had a good game going,” said Martin Oil assistant coach Nathan Stuller, who is currently serving as interim manager as regular manager Brock Anders is currently with his family following the birth of their child last week.
“Blake got tired. I might have let him go a little bit too long. We walked four guys in that inning. You let four guys on and one guy makes contact, it’s a whole new ballgame. That’s what happens. Errors happen, but we rarely make errors.”
Other than Lehner’s infield single that ended the game, Tyrone Legion had just one other hit — a hot shot RBI single into left field from Andrew Pearson in the third inning that scored Tyrone’s lone run to that point.
Although Tyrone Legion was struggling with the bats, Tyrone starting pitcher Aiden Coleman had also done a good job missing Martin Oil’s bats.
Coleman went six innings and allowed three runs and just one earned on three hits. He walked three and struck out 10 before giving the ball to Lehner in the top of the seventh.
In the top of the first, Schmoke reached on an error, while Mark Stewart drew a two-out walk. Cooper Guyer then delivered with an RBI single to give Martin Oil a 1-0 lead.
Martin Oil added on another run in the top of the third as Stewart grounded into a fielder’s choice, which scored John Kost, who reached on a leadoff walk.
Pearson’s RBI single cut Tyrone Legion’s deficit in half at 2-1, but Johnston retired his next 10 batters going into the seventh inning.
In the top of the sixth, Owen Shaulis worked a two-out free pass, and Joe Dorminy followed with a double that scored Shaulis after he stole second base, giving Martin Oil a 3-1 lead.
With Lehner on the mound in the top of the seventh, Jake Bollinger led off with a base hit before Kost earned a walk. After a flyout, Johnston also drew a free pass to load the bases.
Stewart lifted a fly ball to left field that the Tyrone left fielder couldn’t handle, which scored another run to make it 4-1.
Lehner got out of the inning with a shallow fly ball and a groundout to set up the bottom of the seventh.
Tyrone Legion, which improved to 3-1, hosts Remax on Wednesday. Martin Oil (4-1) goes to Vets Field on Wednesday to play Proactive Sports.
