Bellwood-Antis’ Joe Wertz has been named The Daily Herald’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending on May 11.

Wertz broke the shot put record at the Inter-County Conference meet with a distance of 50-2 1/2, breaking the mark that was set in 2009.

“That was really big for Joe,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich. “Last year, districts was kind of a springboard for him. He took fourth as a freshman, and I think that just helped him with his confidence for this year. He’s been throwing very consistent in shot and discus.”
