This stone-block foundation isn’t just any ordinary foundation. It’s a part of the massive Route 22 bypass of Huntingdon undertaken during late 1940s and early 1950s. The foundation is believed to be near the present day intersection of routes 22 and 26 in Smithfield Township. The project reached completion as the historic Huntingdon and Broad Top Mountain Railroad ceased operations following a lengthy crusade to save the coal-hauling line. Major work on the intersection’s bridge, which involved removing the foundation, was completed in the last couple of years.
