Work is continuing on the creation of senior apartments in the former Defiance Elementary School, Broad Top Township Supervisors learned during a voting recent session chaired by Donald Hedge Jr.
Supervisors Bryan Melius, Donald Black and Hedge reviewed the progress taking place at the township-owned structure which also houses the municipal offices and other facilities on the ground floor.
Black told fellow supervisors that construction work is progressing slowly, noting that base cabinets are installed but not the wall cabinets.
“A lot of touchups are going to need completed,” explained Black. “We are still anticipating a completion date of June 1.”
In preparation for the opening of the apartments on the top floor of the former school, Hedge suggested that a tour of the apartment complex be arranged for area volunteer fire companies so that they will be familiar with the layout of the building should an emergency happen.
It was also learned that Lutheran Social Ministries informed the township that it will continue renting space in the building for a pre-school program.
In other agenda business, Hedge reported that eminent domain proceedings are ongoing as the township prepares to acquire three remaining properties on the northern end of the H&BT Rail Trail. The municipality hopes to extend the present 12.6-mile recreational path two additional miles to reach Warriors Path State Park, just south of Saxton.
Hedge added that the township will provide requested documents and information about the proposed rail trail extension to two property owners.
“We will give them the information we have available and continue to work through the process.” he explained.
Regarding the often-discussed Huff Subdivision on-lot systems project, Hedge said that design work has been completed, but no construction has started. The supervisors agreed to send certified letters to the lot owners informing them that work on the project needs to begin within 90 days on the proposed sewage system.
In his monthly roadmaster’s report, Hedge told the supervisors that township maintenance crews continue routine spring road maintenance including cleaning tiles, grading roads and preparing municipal trucks for upcoming road blacktopping.
Hedge added that two bids were received for blacktopping work, but the supervisors delayed awarding the bid until additional information can be obtained.
The supervisors reviewed the progress being made at the Riddlesburg acid mine drainage (AMD) remediation site and learned that a new AMD project is planned in the Finleyville area.
Hedge reported that the township applied for state Dirt & Gravel Road funds to help finance proposed improvements on Valley Church Road in the Sherman Valley area.
He also reported that the municipality has secured a $401,000 grant to finance the construction of campgrounds at the Cooper Recreational Area. The money is being channeled through the Local Share Account/Pennsylvania Gaming Fund program.
The municipality is eying the creation of 80 sites with the majority of the sites being fully equipped while other sites will be earmarked for primitive camping.
In other matters the supervisors:
— approved a request from the Six Mile Run Area Volunteer Fire Co. for use of the township-owned Coopers Recreational Area for a float on June 3. The supervisors stressed the need that the site be clean up after the event while also emphasizing that the fire company must provide a porta-john at the site.
— approved the Daniel and Lori Buseck subdivision request at a location in the Enid area of the municipality.
