Auxiliary members of the Mapleton American Legion Post 322 recently provided a coffee station to the VA Outpatient Clinic, located in Brady Township. In showing support to veterans to the area, auxiliary members will maintain the coffee station.
Auxiliary members also visited Mapleton-Union Elementary School the week before Memorial Day weekend to put on a puppet show. Students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade enjoyed the puppets, Clara Belle and Claude, telling three different stories. Claude wanted to educate the students about the Pledge of Allegiance and to always respect the flag. Claude thought knowing the meaning of the words of the pledge gives a better understanding of why people make a pledge to the flag. Clara Belle told the story of the poppy and why the red poppy flower is a symbol of sacrifice.
Each student received a book marker with a poppy and a coloring sheet of the pledge to the flag after the show.
Auxiliary members feel presenting educational classes such as these to the youth give students a better understanding of what it means to be an American.
