Troop 24 holds Court of Honor

Troop 24 of Alexandria recently held a Court of Honor at the Petersburg Firehall to recognize scouts for their achievements and awards they received during the spring of 2019. The troop was also honored to host Cub Scout Pack 24, also of Alexandria, as the pack held their Arrow of Light ceremony for two Webelo Scouts. The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouting. The Court of Honor was opened by Scoutmaster Bob Lalli who then turned the floor over to Scouts from Troop 24 and Cub Scouts from Pack 24 for the the presentation of the colors. Senior Patrol Leader Jacob Smithmyer then led everyone present in the Pledge of Allegiance and all scouts in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. The invocation was led by Scout Tucker Lalli. Some of the scouts are working on the cooking merit badge and were asked to make a dish for the Court of Honor. After eating, the scouts informed the guests of what dish they had prepared. Scoutmaster Lalli then gave a synopsis of some of the troop’s activities from the past few months. In addition to regular troop meetings and merit badge work, in January the troop participated in the Juniata Valley Council Klondike Derby held at Seven Mountains Scout Camp. In February, Troop 24 and Pack 24 participated in Scout Sunday services at the Alexandria Presbyterian Church and the troop the went tubing at Blue Knob Ski Resort and conducted a winter campout. March saw the troop start more merit badge work and host an electronics weekend while cabin camping. In April, the scouts held a weekend fishing campout at Seven Mountains Scout Camp, organized a youth Easter egg hunt in Alexandria, conducted a flag retirement ceremony at the Cloyd K. Davis American Legion Post 150 in Petersburg and assisted volunteers with tree limb cleanup on Lower Trail. The following merit bages were presented: Jacob Smithmyer, Signs, Signals and Codes; Tucker Lalli, Forestry; Dakota Baumiam, Nature; Jack Confer, Camping ; Vincent Hoover, Personal Fitness; Westley Stiver, Citizenship in the World. The following awards were also presented: Camden Dysard, Scout rank; Zachary Dick, Second Class rank; Conner Harbst and Andrew Stania, First Class rank. Zachary Stiver was recognized for recently earning his Eagle Scout rank; he’s awaiting his Eagle Scout Court of Honor for official recognition. Pack 24 Cubmaster Matt Price gave out awards to cub scouts Conner Price and Brycen Miller and Webelo Scouts Barrett Parsons and Zachary Snare. Barrett and Zachary were also then awarded their Arrow of Light awards by Price in a special ceremony and both Webelos “crossed over” to awaiting scouts from Troop 24 and became new scouts in the troop. The Court of Honor was then concluded by SPL Smithmyer and leaders Lalli and Chris Confer. The troop has many activities planned for 2019 including climbing, hiking, camping at Gettysburg, cycling and summer camp at Seven Mountains Scout camp. Some civic duties planned are flag replacement at Alexandria and Petersburg cemeteries, Memorial Day parades and services in Aexandria, Petersburg, and Mooresville, cleanup at the Thousand Steps and roadside cleanup around Alexandria — to name a few. Troop 24 is chartered by the William P Spyker American Legion Post 520 in Alexandria and is an United Way Partner. Troop meetings from 6-8 p.m. Sundays at the Scout house on Shelton Avenue in Alexandria.
