Barbara Jean Espy, 79, of Tyrone, passed away at her home Friday, Feb. 19, 2021.

Born in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Sept. 23, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Joseph C. and Marie R. McCloskey. She married John Paul Espy Jr. June 3, 1966, at the First English Lutheran Church in Tyrone. Mr. Espy preceded her in death Jan. 13, 2010.

She is survived by a daughter, Jamie McGlaughlin and husband Thomas, a daughter-in-law, Amy Espy, and five grandchildren, Derek and Alek McGlaughlin and Tessa, John Paul IV and Lexi Espy.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph L. McCloskey. Her son, John P. Espy III, passed away shortly after her the same day.

Mrs. Espy was a member of Lower Spruce Creek Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder for three terms and was a member of the women’s organization.

She was an honorary Rotarian.

Mrs. Espy was a 1959 graduate of Camp Hill High School and a 1963 graduate of Grove City College where she attained a bachelor of arts degree in English.

She was a high school English teacher, having taught at Tyrone High School from 1963-1968, as well as Juniata Valley High School from 1976-2003, where she was also the speech league adviser. In December 2003, she and her husband, along with her son, started Espy Transport LLC.

In her earlier years, Mrs. Espy traveled to 49 states and many foreign countries. She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed home decorating, gardening, reading and her beloved dogs and horses.

Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. Thursday, Feb. 25.

Private service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Espy’s memory may be made to the Huntingdon County Humane Society, 11371 School House Hollow Road, Huntingdon, PA 16652.
