Dawn McGerrow Herzberg, 88, long-time resident of Three Springs, passed away quietly Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019, at Misericordia Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Centerin York. She had been in declining health for the past year. Born Feb. 20, 1931, in Puunene, Maui, Hawaii, she was the daughter of Samuel V. and Grace Yuen McGerrow. She grew up on the island of Maui, until she and her parents moved to Honolulu at the beginning of World War II. After the war, she moved with her army officer father and mother to Tokyo, Japan. Following that, the family relocated to Washington, D.C., where she completed high school, attended the Washington School for Secretaries, and met her husband, Chauncey Herzberg Jr., of Mankato, Minnesota. The two were wed Oct. 4, 1951, in Mankato. The family moved to Three Springs, in 1968. Mr. Herzberg preceded her in death in 2000.
Dawn was employed for many years as the secretary of the science department of Juniata College, Huntingdon, from which she retired in 1998. She was active in college affairs, and she played in the recorder group, Moore Street Pro Musica. She had been a member of the local social sorority Beta Sigma Phi and had been active with the Girl Scouts of America as a scout leader. She was a member of the Cassville Lutheran Church and greatly enjoyed the fellowship of the folks there. She also enjoyed music playing several instruments, art, crafts, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, reading, flower arranging, and she liked to share these passions with her children. She was a stickler for correct grammar usage, and she also liked to pass along corrections, contributing to the good grammar of her children. As well, she passed along to her family a love and pride of Hawaiian heritage and a love of Hawaii as “home.”
She is survived by a brother, Richard McGerrow, of Honolulu, Hawaii; three children, Victoria Herzberg of Bloomfield, New Jersey, Valerie Ford and her husband David of Three Springs, and Kurt Herzberg and his wife Delores of Dover; three grandchildren, Adam Herzberg, Logan Herzberg, and Laura Herzberg Harper; and three great-grandchildren, Addyson, Declan and Gracelynn.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3, at the First Baptist Church of Three Springs, with her son, the Rev. Kurt Herzberg, and her son-in-law, the Rev. David Ford, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cassville Lutheran Church, in care of Kathie Ramsey, 17740 New Fording Road, Todd, PA 16685.
