The Huntingdon field hockey team showed some of its youth in an 11-0 season opening loss to visiting Forbes Road Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals got three goals from Quincy McMath and two from both Camryn Horne and Heidi Strait. They got single goals from Braelyn Snyder and Emma Gelvin as well as two unidentified players in the fourth quarter.
Forbes had a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners and a 14-7 edge in shots on goal.
“We’re happy with the way the team played today,” said Huntingdon coach Shayla Bishop. “Forbes is always a challenging opponent and we have a lot of young players this year, including goalies Rachel Dixson and Ky. McGrath. It’s a tough position, but they’ve come a long way since the beginning of the year.
“We saw some good things today, like improved passing a stick skills. But, we also saw areas where we can improve. We need better communication and time use and need to cut to be open to help out teammates. Now, our new players know what a game situation is like and we’re excited for our next game.”
That will come Thursday when the Bearcats play host to Southern Huntingdon.
