Juniata Valley did not see anything work right in its game against visiting Bellwood-Antis Monday. Everything that could go wrong or look bad did and the Blue Devils grabbed a 52-47 win over the Hornets.
The Hornets (6-4, 4-1 ICC) led for part of the first quarter and played catch-up from then on. From field goal shooting, rebounding, turnovers, foul shots, pretty much everything didn’t look good in this one.
“You’ll have nights like that. We tried to battle through it but it wasn’t our night. Bellwood executed and they won,” Juniata Valley head coach TJ Anderson said.
Quinn Zinobile scored 16 points to lead the Hornets. Cameron Collins had six points in the fourth quarter to finish with 12. Jaxson Rand added 10. Juniata Valley went 10 of 21 from the foulline.
Troy Walker scored 14 points, Nathan Wolfe 13, and T.J. Wyland 12 for the Blue Devils (4-4, 3-2 ICC).
It was a slow start for both teams. After a three-pointer to open the game by Bellwood, the Hornets slowly took a 6-3 lead with a couple fast-break buckets by Rand and Collins.
Collins found Paul Leri on the break to tie the game 8-8. The last 2:20 of the period the Blue Devils took a 12-8 lead.
Bellwood had nine turnovers in the first quarter but the Hornets couldn’t capitalize. Juniata Valley came up with just seven points in the second stanza.
Zinobile sank a three that made the score 18-13. Bellwood used an 8-2 run the last 3:55 of the half to lead 26-15.
Bellwood only scored five points in the third quarter, but Juniata Valley only had 11. Wyland hit a trey to give the Devils a 31-18 lead. Bellwood didn’t score the last 4:23 of the third, but still led 31-26.
Juniata Valley went 5 of 12 from the line in the final period. Jacob Hensor’s tap-in made the score 41-37. Down 47-40, the Hornets cut the different to two with full-court pressure.
Collins and Zinobile each had steals for a 47-45 score with 1:14 left to play. Collins scored but didn’t convert the plus-one free throw with 46 seconds left. Bellwood hit a few foul shots and the Hornets missed three, three-pointers on their last possession.
Caden Rupert had 13 points in a 45-38 win for the Hornet junior varsity (5-1).
Juniata Valley hosts West Branch Thursday.
