The Mount Union offense continued to generate runs in its second game of the Area Five 15-16 VFW Teener League All-Star Tournament. They were coming off a 10-run win against Huntingdon in the opener, then turned up the heat Friday evening when they downed visiting Bellefonte 12-1 in five innings.
Mount Union got to Bellefonte pitching early, taking advantage of seven walks and seven hits over the first two and one-third innings. They put six runs on the board in the first inning and loaded the bases in three out of four innings. Dylan Dann suffered the loss for Bellefonte.
Ian Brodbeck pitched all five innings for Mount Union to get the win. He allowed just five hits and two walks and struck out four.
“We continue to come out strong and hit the ball real well early,” stated Mount Union manager Jason Grove. “The defense has been performing well with just a couple mistakes. The team has put up 22 runs in the first two games and I can’t ask for much more than that. Our pitching has been strong. We got out of a little trouble in the fourth inning, shutting down what could have turned into a rally. We are excited about this team.”
Mount Union jumped on Bellefonte for six runs on six hits and three walks in the first inning. Brodbeck led off with a single and the next two batters walked to load the bases. Vincent Lear drove the ball to the fence in right field to score two runs. Dayvon Wilson walked to reload the bases and Aaron Lopez walked to plate a run. Gabe Atherton singled in a run and Trevor Skopic drove in a run with another single.
Lear led off the second with a single and later scored on a third strike dropped ball after the throw to first.
In the third inning, Colton Benson drew a lead off walk and moved over when Lear being hit by a pitch. Wilson drew a walk to load the bases for the third inning in a row. Benson scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.
In the top of the fourth, Bellefonte scored its only run of the game. Harry Horner reached on an error in the infield and later scored on a single by Mike Henry.
Mount Union put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Skopic led off with a double, the only extra base it of the game moved over and scored on a ball passed ball with Brodbeck drawing the walk. Benson walked and scored on a throwing error. Tyler Renninger reached on an error and scored with Lear who reached on an earlier error and put up the fourth run on a throw to first base.
Mount Union held in the top of the fifth inning to log the 12-1 win.
Mount Union will host Bald Eagle tonight at 5:30 p.m.
