The Southern Huntingdon field hockey team could not seem to get it going Tuesday afternoon when it hosted Forbes Road. The Rockets played most of the day with their back to the goal from an aggressive Forbes Road squad. The Cardinals scored four goals in the first half and added three in the second half to take the 7-0 victory back to Hustontown.
In the first half, the Rockets (1-1) did not take a shot on goal. With 17:42 on the clock, the Cards’ Quincy McMath found the back of the cage off an assist from Harlie Strait. It only took five minutes until McMath again got in front of the cage and, out of a scramble, drove the ball home for her second goal. Strait then scored with 5:47 left in the first half when she rattled the ball off a Rocket stick for the score. Kaelonni Lashinsky scored the fourth goal for the Cardinals with 3:45 to go in the half out of a scramble in front of the cage. The Cardinals ended the first half taking 13 shots on goal and they had 11 penalty corner opportunities. The Rocket goalie Rachel Overcash had six saves in the half.
The second half was more of the same for the Rockets, though they appeared a little more confident than they were to get the match started. The Rockets still did not get a swing at the net in the second half.
It did not take long for McMath get her third goal of the afternoon on a scramble being. She was assisted by Lashinsky. Four minutes, Strait nailed her second goal off an assist from Madison Hays. McMath added the seventh goal of the afternoon with 20:10 on the game clock from in front of the goal. The Cardinals took 16 shots in the second half and had five corners. Overcash added 11 more saves for the Rockets.
“I think we were intimidated by Forbes Road,” commented Rocket head coach Amanda Smith. “We did not match up well in the circle on defense and did not cut to the ball the way we should have. We did have some bright spots handling the ball and the team had some very good saves.”
The Rockets will host Huntingdon Tuesday afternoon.
