After its 8-2 win at top-seeded Tyrone Thursday afternoon, fourth-seeded Mount Union had to wait 24 hours to find out who it would be playing in the District 6-3A championship game Tuesday afternoon at Altoona’s PNG Field.
The Trojans (20-3) will face another Mountain League opponent when they take on sixth-seeded Philipsburg (15-7) at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Philipburg opened it 2019 district bid with a 15-7 quarterfinal victory over third-seeded Richland before yesterday’s win. Mount Union defeated fifth-seeded Ligonier Valley 9-2 in its quarterfinal matchup.
Each exited early in the Class 3A district field a year ago. Philipsburg lost to top-seeded Huntingdon in the quarterfinals and Mount Union was ousted by Bald Eagle in the semis.
Both teams will advance to the 16-team PIAA Class 3A bracket. The district champion will face the District Three runnerup in the June 3 first round, while the runner up will likely face a long trip to battle the District Seven champion. The PIAA Class 3A championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, home of the Penn State baseball team.
