The Mount Union baseball team brought down the curtain on its 2022 regular season with a pair of wins over visiting Curwensville Thursday afternoon. The Trojans won the opener 11-1 in six innings, then captured the nightcap 12-1, also in six innings.

The wins give the Trojans an 18-2 overall record and a 13-1 mark in the ICC North. They wait for word early next week to find out who they’ll face in the District 6-2A playoffs.

“We knew Curwensville played good defense, but this was a great way to end the regular season,” said Mount Union coach Tim Hicks. “We got good pitching from Dayvon Wilson and Bryce Danish. The defense played errorless ball behind them and we had the offense rolling.”

The Trojans took the early lead in the opening game. Danish singled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Cam Donaldson.

Curwensville tied the game in the third when Jake Mullins scored on a two-out single by Spencer Hoover.

The Mount Union offense sputtered until some two-out lightning struck in the fifth.

With two out, Danish singled and moved to third on Donaldson’s second double of the game. Braylan Knable walked to load the bases, then Cainen Atherton drove a 2-1 pitch to left for a grand slam home run to make it 5-1.

The Trojans added six more runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the contest.

Dayvon Wilson struck out five, walked three and gave up just three hits for the complete game victory.

For the Tide, Shane Sunderlin went the distance, striking out three walking three and allowing 11 hits.

“Cainen put a great swing on the ball for the home run,” said Hicks. “It gave us a spark that got us through the doubleheader.”

Playing as the visiting team in the nightcap, the Trojans struck early with three runs in the first.

Danish led off the game with a triple and scored on a Donaldson sacrifice fly. Atherton drew a two-out walk and Blaine Hunsinger singled to left. An infield single by Je’sean Robinson loaded the bases and Wilson singled up the middle to drive in a pair of runs.

In the second, Landon Chrisemer and Danish each drew walks. A two-out single by Atherton drove in Chrisemer. Hunsinger drew a walk to load the bases and Robinson was hit by a pitch to force home a run to make it 5-0.

Curwensville got its only tally when Thad Butler scored on a Jayson Rowles sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Mount Union added one run in the fifth, then scored six in the sixth to end the game early.

Danish got the complete game win, striking out eight, walking two and yielding just three hits.

Three Curwensville pitchers struck out one, walked six and gave up a dozen hits. Rowles started and suffered the loss.
